Zachary Zach Johnston's Obituary
Zachary "Zach" Johnston, 44, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on February 12, 2025, in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
Born on June 22, 1980, in Iuka, Mississippi, Zach was a longtime Memphian who embraced his community with kindness and generosity. He was a loving and faithful husband, a devoted father, and a friend to all who knew him. Hard-working and loyal, he carried a gentle spirit that touched the lives of many. A proud graduate of the University of Memphis, Zach was an avid supporter of his hometown teams—the Memphis Tigers, the Grizzlies, and the Tennessee Titans. He sought focus in the outdoors, running, hiking, and camping. He appreciated the peace he found in nature. His passion for working with his hands and helping others extended beyond his profession; he found joy in using his skills to assist those in need. One of his greatest accomplishments was founding Johnston Services, where he subcontracted for both commercial and residential projects.
Zach was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Harland Ramsey Johnston (Teresa) and his brother-in-law Mark Mills. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Laughlin Johnston; his sister, Amanda Johnston; his brother, Malakai Johnston (Dianela); and the children he adored, Isabella June and Caleb Dean. He will also be deeply missed by his nieces and nephews: Danielle Marie Mills, Marissa Diana Mills, Kenny Caldwell, MJ Newby, Joseph Andrew Johnston, Ireland Shea Johnston, and Aurora Dylan Johnston.
One of the greatest joys of Zach’s life was celebrating five years of consistent sobriety—a journey that led him to meeting and marrying Rebecca. The life they built together brought him immense happiness and fulfillment.
Pallbearers are Jeffrey Centobie, Galen Shawn Gower, Malakai Dylan Johnston, Kris Henry Kirby, David Crain Rosenberg, and David Lee Smith. A memorial service to honor Zach’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on February 21, 2025, in the Chapel at Harvest Church (3645 Forest Hill Irene Road, Germantown, TN 38138), with visitation to follow in the fellowship hall. Parking is near the chapel facing Winchester Road.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation in Zach's memory to Midsouth Sober Living (1950 Madison Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38104). The family will lay him to rest with a private burial. Zach’s legacy of love, hard work, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
