William Henry Zachry's Obituary
William H. Zachry, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on June 19, 2023 after a courageous struggle against Parkinson’s Disease. He was preceded in death by his son, William Harris Zachry. who also succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease two years previously. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lynda, his granddaughter MacKenzy Zachry, his brother John Zachry and wife Shirley, his sister Ellen Craig and husband Ron, niece Meg Zachry, nephews Drew Zachry, Jonathan Craig, Kevin Craig and many cousins and grand nieces and nephews. His cat Zeke was a comforting companion until the end.
Bill was born to the late William H. Zachry, Sr. and Margaret Anderson Zachry on August 12, 1942 in Chattanooga, TN and was raised surrounded by many family members on Signal Mountain. From an early age he had an extreme curiosity and desire to know everything. He excelled in every interest he pursued. He especially loved music and played several instruments throughout his life, focusing mainly on piano and organ. He played for several churches and numerous events of family and friends.
Bill also loved spending time outdoors in nature hiking, and observing animals and became an Eagle Scout while in high school. He graduated from Chattanooga High School, Oberlin College with a BA in psychology, and earned a MA and PhD in Psychology from the University of Memphis. He was married on May 30, 1970 to Lynda who was his constant, loving companion for 53 years. He taught psychology at UT Martin for 33 years as well as being Director of the Honors Program. Bill served on the faculty at the University of Memphis and was the director of online psychology courses from 2005-2021. In the past few years Bill and Lynda enjoyed traveling to visit national parks and created beautiful photo albums.
Bill was brilliant, personable, kind, gentle and made a difference in the lives of countless students and many others whose lives he touched. He will be remembered for his sense of wit and humor, compassion and his joy in his faith and will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research.
Visitation will be Tuesday June 27, 2023, from 1:00pm until 2:00pm with funeral services starting at 2:00pm.
