William Edison Wingfield's Obituary
Dr. William Edison Wingfield, 71, passed away at his home July 26, 2013. He graduated from White Station High School and continued his education at the University of Memphis, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Master of Arts degree in History. In 1987, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from Duke University. During his career, he taught at the following colleges: Elon College, UNC – Greensboro, NC Central University, and Christian Brothers University. He was currently a Professor at the University of Memphis. Dr. Wingfield was a strong advocate for classroom teaching, considering it to be his sanctuary. He received the University College Advising Award in 2009 and Distinguished Faculty Award in 2011, both from the University of Memphis. Dr. Wingfield was preceded in death by his sister, Ann W. Stirling Poley and is survived by his parents, Middleton B. and Frances Wingfield; son, William E. Wingfield, Jr. (Amy); brother, Middleton B. Wingfield, III (Nina) and grandchildren, William E. Wingfield, III “Trey” and Logan Wingfield.
