Dr. Wingfield was one of the best professor, mentor, and good friend that I had the pleasure of getting to know during my collegiate journey. I was shocked and saddened about the news of his passing, but I always keep this quote in the back mind whenever I think about him. It simply states, “If a scholar knows the missing variable between knowledge and power is language- the world will unfold to you.” To Dr. Wingfield in my opinion, language is the universal tool that grants, produce, and influence power that shapes one living experience in a social world. Dr. Wingfield’s legacy lies within each and every one of us who as his students were lucky enough to wind up under his tutelage. He was a fascinating professor, a caring advisor, a great conversationalist, and I will always be grateful my path and his crossed. It was his pushing that first encouraged me to consider the doctoral program in History – he wisely pointed out that we will always need teachers to teach future teachers. Dr. Wingfield will be missed deeply, but never forgotten. May his soul and his family find peace.
