Walter B. Smith's Obituary
MEMPHIS-Walter B. Smith, 62, of Memphis, TN passed away peacefully on Friday, July 14, 2023.
A celebration of life service will be held in Walter’s honor on July 21, 2023, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Vanderbilt University Medical Center – Heart Transplant.
Walter was born on Easter Sunday in 1961 to Eloyce and Dr. V.I. Smith in Memphis, TN. He joined the Marine Corps as a young man before embarking on a career as an aircraft mechanic with FedEx. In 1985, he married his best friend, Ruth. They raised two daughters and enjoyed road-tripping across the country.
Walter enjoyed many hobbies including photography, fishing, camping, pet rescue, and motorcycles. He was a reluctant sports fan and Disney passholder. He had a cowboy spirit and enjoyed country music. His favorite hobby was helping others, which he did as a Freemason, Shrine Clown, and volunteer with many children’s events. Walter was many things to many people, but he was always a character and a friend, especially to those most in need of a friend.
Walter was preceded by his parents and far too many very dear friends. He will be missed greatly by his wife, daughters, grand-child, brothers, family, friends, and dogs. Walter’s loved ones are grateful to have shared many laughs and good memories throughout the years. His family and friends were blessed to enjoy wonderful bonus years and would have celebrated the 5-year anniversary of his heart and kidney transplant in August. These years were gifted by a stranger who made the selfless choice that their last service would be to help a stranger in need. The family asks that you please consider being an organ donor.
