Vernon McGarity's Obituary
Vernon McGarity, 91, passed away due to cancer on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Memphis, TN.Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ethelene McGarity, and his daughter, Sharon McGarity. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Vernon Ray McGarity and Lee McGarity, and his dear friend Dorothy Burns.He never asked to be a hero, but he handled it well. A World War II veteran of the European theater, Vernon was the recipient of ten medals including the Medal of Honor, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and two Belgian medals. His Medal of Honor citation can be found on the Medal of Honor Society’s website (www.cmohs.org).Vernon also served in the TN National Guard for 28 years ending his career with the rank of Lt. Colonel.Additionally for 35 years, Vernon secured benefits for veterans at the Veterans Hospital (Memphis) and with the Veterans Administration (Jackson, TN).Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 5668 Poplar, Memphis, TN, 38119.
