Richard Nelms Herbert Sr.'s Obituary
Richard Nelms Herbert, Sr. 83, of Germantown went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at his home.
He was born on February 19, 1939 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Dr. Charles T. Herbert, Sr. and Martha Nelms Herbert.
Richard founded Contract Carpet Specialists and ran this successful business for more than 40 years. He floored more than 120 churches and educational institutions in Memphis.
Outside of work, Richard lived the life of many men. He spent much time with his beloved horse, Jake. Together they took part in Civil War Reenactments. He was a beekeeper and even dabbled in fencing. One of Richard’s main passions was being a Reservist with the Memphis Police Department. On July 14, 2022 he celebrated 50 years of continuous service as an officer. He logged 32,000+ hours, which is equivalent to 20 years of full-time service. During his time with the MPD he served in various capacities including, Patrol, Vice, Mounted Patrol and the Motors Division. In Richard’s last 10 years of his life, he dedicated his time to training his dog, Lily, to be a therapy dog with West TN Therapy Dogs. He was very passionate about visiting the children at St. Jude with the Doggy Daze program and visiting with distressed passengers at The Memphis Airport.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carol Herbert, one son, Richard N. Herbert, Jr. and his wife, Norma, his daughter, Michelle Durham, four grandchildren: John, Charles, Sable, and Chase and seven great grandchildren.
The visitation will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2023 beginning at 2:00 p.m. with his memorial service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
