Patrick Smith's Obituary
Patrick J. Smith, 68 passed away Saturday, February 20 at St. Francis Hospital, Memphis, TN. He was the ultimate husband and father and loving and caring friend. He was born in Chicago, IL and attended St. Viator High School in Illinois and John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1970. He was commissioned into the U.S. Army at graduation from John Carroll University. He served active duty in Charleston, SC. He leaves his wife, Linda E. Smith of nearly 45 years. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Thomas “Tommy” Patrick Smith. He was a true patriot with a kind and gentle heart. He loved the Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs. He coached throughout the years in youth baseball and soccer and volunteered to numerous church and community activities. His dedication was to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where he donated nearly 200 sets of platelets and was working as a volunteer every week at the blood donor center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hal Smith and Eugenia Smith; sister, Joan; brother, Thomas; and aunt, Nat. Besides being survived by his wife, Linda, he is also survived by sisters, Jeanne Marie, Mary Ricotta (John); brother, Joseph Smith (Betsy); buddy, Jeremiah; and “adopted” daughter, Tonya Beckley Todd. He was known as “Papa Pat” to his adopted grandchildren. He also is survived by loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews and many friends. He was a communicant of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Thursday, February 25 from 4-8 p.m., with the Rosary at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4851 Park Avenue, Friday, February 26 at 11 am with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his loving memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
