Dr. Mary Vroman Battle's Obituary
Dr. Mary Vroman Battle eased out of this world without pain or regret on Sunday afternoon August 19, 2018. Dr. Battle was an English professor emeritus, wife, and mother. She leaves behind her husband Dr. Allen Overton Battle, her son Allen Overton Battle III, two surviving siblings, Rosemary Herman and Richard Vroman, two in-laws, Irma Vroman and Larry Tillemans, her goddaughter Denise Weedman, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She spoke Flemish as a child, soon mastering English and then French. Dr. Battle graduated from the College of St. Teresa in Minnesota, Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., and earned her doctorate from The University of Memphis. She earned numerous accolades, including being inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, and was an advisor to the local chapter of Mortar Board. She taught English with total dedication at the U. of M. for nearly fifty years. She taught literature, composition, technical writing, and did cutting-edge meta-analytical research on teaching English communication in the most effective method. She was a member of the Faculty Senate and was Secretary of the Faculty Senate for several years. She lived a full life attending musical performances regularly, and was fortunate enough to travel to Brussels, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Paris, London, and Munich, often in association with her giving presentations to professional organizations. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Thursday, August 23, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. A 10:00 am Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Friday, August 24. Inurnment will be at 10:00 am Saturday, August 25 at Calvary Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to The University of Memphis, Catholic University of America, or the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception rather than delivering anything to the residence.
