My sincerest sympathy! Dr. Battle, who always wanted me to call her Mary but I was unable to break my habit of addressing her as Dr. Battle, was such an encouraging and kind professor and friend.., I will always remember her as a true friend.

I am so very sad to hear of Dr. Battle’s passing. She was very kind to me when I was working in the coffee shop in the Patterson building and when I was an English graduate student later on. She always had a smile and an anecdote to share. I’ll miss her.

Notice that regarding the death of both Lazarus and Jairus’ daughter, Jesus compared death to sleep. That is a fitting comparison. Why? Sleep is an unconscious state and suitably conveys the idea of rest from pain and suffering. (Ecclesiastes 9:5; “For he [Christ] must rule as king until God has put all enemies under his feet. And the last enemy, death, is to be brought to nothing.” (1 Corinthians 15:25, 26) “He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more.”—Revelation 21:4. “The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.”—John 5:28, 29.
