Margaret L Crull's Obituary
Margaret (Peggy) L. Crull passed away on August 21, 2023 in New York City. Daughter to
Donald and Frances Crull, she was the youngest of three children, born on July 25, 1946, in
Memphis, Tennessee.
She grew up in Memphis where she attended Central High School and Rhodes College
(formerly Southwestern of Memphis). She received her B.A. in Psychology, with honors. She
went on to attend Teachers College in New York and received her PhD in Psychology from
Columbia University.
She received the following honors, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi Honorary Scientific Society,
and the Susan B. Anthony Award.
Dr. Crull's professional career was devoted to human rights and social justice: rights of
women, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, people of color and immigrants. She held
various positions including: Program Evaluator of the United Cerebral Palsy of New York;
Executive and Research Director at the Working Women's Institute of New York; Adjunct
Professor – Herbert H. Lehman College; where she taught Psychology of Women, Theories
of Personality, and Theories of Development. She was nationally acknowledged as an
expert in the areas of Womens Rights and Sexual Harassment and published papers on
these matters. She was employed for many years at the New York City Commission on
Human Rights as a Research Coordinator of Publications and Development in the office of
Special Programs. Upon retirement she became incredibly involved in her community at the
Penn South Social Services, where she was a member of the Board of Directors. Over the
years she also volunteered with CARASA, Planned Parenthood and Center Kids.
She enjoyed traveling, reading, writing, all music, bird watching, theater, visiting museums,
and she was a lover of cats. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends,
including friendships she maintained from her high school and college years.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister Julie Goddard and stepmother Louise
Brooks Crull. She is survived by her daughter Anna G. M. Crull of New York City, her brother
Elgin Crull (Susan) of Louisville, Kentucky, and step-sister Nancy Sullivan, of Ormond Beach,
Florida.
There will be a private family burial in Memphis, Tennessee and a celebration of life for
friends and family in New York City at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers you
