Marcia Baker's Obituary
Marcia Swett Baker, 63, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 22, 2013, peacefully at home. Born May 19, 1949, in Forrest City, Arkansas, she called Memphis home for over 50 years. She was president of the student body and graduated from Messick High School in 1967, Rhodes College in 1971 and was a teacher from 1971-2005. She was Press-Scimitar Teenager of the Year in 1967, a WHBQtie, Memphis Junior Miss, and in the Memphis Civic Ballet. A career educator, she not only taught algebra, geometry and calculus, but also gave her life to her students. She retired from Ridgeway High School in 2005. Marcia was raised at St. Matthew’s Methodist Church. She and her husband Brad later joined Second Presbyterian Church where she was a member for 33 years, as well as coordinator of the Fellows Program and a leader in the women’s ministry. She faithfully served the ministry of Young Life alongside Brad. Although never on the YL staff, Marcia opened up her life to the kids, leaders and staff of the ministry. Marcia had a God-given love for people; her gift of hospitality pointed people to Jesus and shaped the women who came in contact with her. Marcia modeled out what it meant to be a godly wife, mother and follower of Christ. Marcia had a servant’s heart and a smile that lit up the room.Marcia is survived by her husband of 41 years, Brad Baker, of Memphis; sons and daughters-in-law Chris and Kelli Baker of Albany, Georgia, and Drew and Paige Baker of Memphis; brothers Kenny Swett of Memphis and Mike Swett of Brentwood, Tennessee.
