Malcolm Gary Hood's Obituary
On Friday, November 25, 2022, at Germantown Methodist Hospital, Mr. Malcolm “Gary” Hood passed peacefully in his sleep with his wife holding his hand. He was 75 years old.
Gary is survived by wife, Peggy Roberts Hood, daughter Tiffany DeShea Hood-Ely (Jason), sister Joanne Wiyott, sister-in-law Jeanne Roberts Perriera (Jerry).
Gary was born January 15, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee to Aaron Eual Hood and Sudie Trull Hood. His early years were enjoyed being a paper-boy and playing football. He also spent his time in various clubs such as The Rat Pack, Eagle Scouts and The Boy Scouts of America.
After high school, Gary served his country in the Military until he earned an Honorable Discharge. Returning to Memphis, he then earned a Bachelor of Science in Law from Memphis State University. This is where met his beloved wife, Peggy Roberts. Gary served his community as a Juvenile Probation Officer for four years and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department for 42 years. During his time with the Sheriff’s office, he received many awards and accolades, including solving a 100 year old murder case.
In his free time, Gary was a Master Class Mason, Cromwell Little League Baseball team coach, Commander of the Robert E. Lee Camp for the Sons of Confederate Veterans (ancestor Gen. John Bell Hood), founder of “America Remembers” celebration, ran for County Court Clerk office, and created the Elmwood Cemetery Walking Tour. He was an avid collector of knives (which he also made), guns, walking canes (some personalized in his own design), stamps, coins, and watches. Gary was also a skilled bow and rifle hunter.
With all of these facets, the most notable of Gary's attributes was his love and devotion to his family, friends and community.
The viewing and service will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, December 11, 2022 starting at 12:00pm. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. also at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Jewish Nursing Home for their care and dedication to Gary during his time there.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Memphis Jewish Home or Wounded Warrior Project in Gary's name.
