Dear Mabel:
Since I learned about your passing last week, many fond memories of you came up in me. It seemed like yesterday that you and I left Hong Kong and came to the US to further our education and to seek a better future. I remembered very well the good times we had in Memphis during our college days in the 70s’ like attending the Memphis Tiger basketball games as well as the BBQs and field trips with our friends in school.
After I graduated, I left Tennessee and started working in the east coast. You and David chose to remain in Memphis. However, from time to time you would call me, and we would talk on the phone to inform each other about what had happened in our life. I now realize that as my oldest sister you wanted to keep up with me to look after me and to make sure that I am doing well. I also remembered very clearly that one time you told me on the phone that you had found faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shared with me the joy that you experienced as a Christian. At that time, I was also a new believer in the Lord, and we had many wonderful fellowships about the eternal plan that the Lord had installed for those who believe. I will never forget that you always reminded me to pray for our parents, brothers and sisters that had not yet been saved. Mabel, I will remember the words that you told me. I will miss you.
Mabel, I also remembered that you and David came to my daughter, Michelle’s wedding about 12 years ago in Outer Bank, North Carolina. This morning, Yu Ying was able to find some of the pictures that you, David, Brian, Yu Ying and I taken together with Michelle and Kenny. Now, as I look at these pictures, I really treasured the wonderful times that we had together.
My dear sister, I want to say goodbye to you for the last time. I believe that one day we will meet again. As the Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so also those who have fallen asleep through Jesus, God will bring with Him”. Therefore, today we should not grieve because for believer to die was considered by the Lord as going to sleep since the dead in Christ will rise again. Mabel, rest in peace.
