Rev. Lionel Cable's Obituary
Pastor Lionel Cable Sr., a warrior for Jesus Christ, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2019 at 7:21 pm at 80 years old. He is survived by wife and best friend of 49 years, JoAnn Cable and his children, Carrie Fagan, Lawanda Cable, Gena Bruner (Grant), Lorna Brown (Ray), and Lionel Cable, Jr. (Tammy); as well as 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Lionel, Sr. proudly served in the United States Air Force before being called by God to the ministry.
Pastor Cable was ordained at St John Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond California. His service to the Lord included associate pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Richmond CA and First AME, Seattle Washington. He pastored High Street Presbyterian Church, Oakland CA; Madrona Presbyterian Church, Seattle WA; Bethel AME, Yakima WA; St. John AME, Topeka, KS; Parkway Gardens Presbyterian Church, Memphis TN; and retired at St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS.
Pastor Cable’s formal education began at Bay Cities Bible College, Berkeley CA and continued at California State University in Hayward, CA. He received his Master of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
In addition, he served as Adjunct Professor at Belhaven College, Jackson MS, teaching the Old Testament, and on numerous church boards, community boards and committees. He boldly proclaimed Gods’ word in prisons, nursing homes, and juvenile facilities and the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson MS.
He was proceeded in death by his father Elijah Cable, mother Mattie Cable, and brother Christopher Cable. He is survived by siblings Leroy Cable, Richmond, CA; Claudette Hamilton, Richmond, CA; Janice Session, Richmond, CA; Jennifer Mason (Willie), Memphis, TN; Pamela Onafowode (Kola), Hercules, CA; Michael Cable (May) Fresno, CA.
The Lord called him home after 60 years of faithfully serving the Lord. His biggest desire was to see men and women come to Christ; therefore, the family is requesting donations be made to New Song Baptist Church, 660 Clinton Place, Memphis, TN 38126 for the repair of the van that picks up children and families, in lieu of flowers, etc.
