Larry Emery's Obituary
Larry Lynn Emery, 70, died peacefully at home December 17, 2018 after battling a long illness. He was born January 9, 1948 in Knoxville, TN. Larry graduated from South High School in Knoxville before moving to Atlanta, GA and later settling down in Memphis, TN.While the love of his life Joyce and he waited to marry until March of 2000, their life together began over a decade before that time. He instantly became a devoted father to both of her children and somehow survived through their teenage years; he then later served as a loving Papa to his grandkids.Larry began his law enforcement career in 1975 with the Memphis Police Department and later joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in 1997, retiring in 2018.When not working, which was not often, Larry enjoyed watching sports, especially UT football, playing golf, or heading to the casinos. He served as a basketball coach in his earlier years and refereed as well, including several years at the Bluff City Classic.A gentle giant, Larry lived and loved large; he will be remembered by the jokes he cracked, the smiles he created, and the love he showed to all.His father Archie Emery preceded his death. Larry is survived by his mother Pauline Emery, Bartlett, TN; wife Joyce Emery, Arlington, TN; brother Rick Emery (Darlene), Collierville, TN; sister Janelle Smith (Derwood), Pine Bluff, AR; sister Dixie Chambers (Brian), Bartlett, TN; daughter Kim Douglas (David), Germantown, TN; son Brad Turner (Jill), Germantown, TN; and six grandchildren.Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis on Friday, December 21 from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Saturday, December 22 at 11 AM.
