John Dale Stewart's Obituary
John Dale Stewart, 70, passed away on June 14, 2026. He was born on December 25,1955 in Memphis, Tennessee, the beloved son of Frank B. Stewart and Geraldine G. Stewart. A gifted student from an early age, he attended Overton High School in Memphis, where he graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1974. He continued his education at Christian Brothers College (now Christian Brothers University), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1978.
Following graduation, John began what would become a distinguished and lifelong career with Phillips Petroleum Company, now Chevron Phillips Chemical, in the polyethylene division. Starting as a chemical process engineer in Houston, TX, he dedicated nearly four decades to the company. Through hard work, expertise and leadership, he advanced to the role of operations plant manager and later contributed to Research and Technology initiatives. His career provided opportunities to travel around the world. Among his most memorable professional experience was spending two years in Singapore as part of a team responsible for the startup of a new polyethylene plant. He also worked in Qatar and Spain, helping to advance projects and strengthen international operations.
In March 2013, John married the love of his life, Elizabeth Benham Stewart. Together, they shared a deep bond. Sadly, Elizabeth passed away on December 27, 2016. Though her loss was profound, John carried her memory with him every day and remained devoted to the life and memories they built together.
John was an enthusiastic sports fan with a particular love for Houston Astros baseball. He and Elizabeth attended as many Astro games as possible, creating countless cherished memories together at the ballpark. Following her passing, John continued the tradition and remained a faithful fan throughout his life. He also enjoyed attending professional golf tournaments throughout the Houston area and looked forward each year to the St. Jude Classic in Memphis.
Above all, John treasured time spent with family. Whether during holidays, vacations or simple family gatherings, he valued the relationships that enriched his life. John is survived by his siblings Hilda A. Boyd (Jim) Louisville, KY, David G. Stewart (Carol) Memphis, TN, Paul L. Stewart (Vicki) Iuka, MS, Claire E. Thompson (David) Olive Branch, MS, brother-in-law Durward Benham, Jr. (Barb) Phoenix, AZ, 10 nieces and nephews, and 17 great-nieces and nephews.
John’s life was one of purpose, dedication and love. He will be remembered not only for his intellect and professional accomplishments but also for his kindness, generosity and
loyalty. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.

Visitation for the family will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, TN on Sunday, July 12, beginning at 12:30 pm with the memorial service to follow at 2:30 pm. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
