John Paul Nash's Obituary
Dr. John Paul Nash went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the age of 88. He was surrounded by his loving family as the Lord called him home. John was born July 4, 1928. He attended Little Flower and CBHS where he graduated in 1946. He was inducted into the Christian Brothers Hall of Fame in 1998. He furthered his education by obtaining his BA and MD degree at the University of Tennessee. He did his general surgery internship at The John Gaston Hospital, he finished his residency at the University of Tennessee. He went into private practice at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He subsequently moved his practice to Baptist Memorial Hospital East where he and his partners had the first office when BMH-E opened. His medical career turned from private practice to teaching. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and was director of the surgical teaching program at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He ended his career teaching surgery residents at the VA. Dr. Nash held leadership positions in numerous professional organizations including the Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, American Cancer Society, West Tennessee Chapter of Ave Maria Home and the Catholic Physician’s Guild and was a member of the Admissions Committee for the UT College of Medicine. He was awarded the 2012 Pillar Award of Distinction for Emeritus Physicians by Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation. He was a past member of the University Club and The Memphis Country Club where he enjoyed golf and the fellowship of friends. He was a member of Kappa Sigma at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Nash served in the Air Force and was stationed in South Carolina. Dr. Nash’s passion was taking care of his patients and teaching. He touched countless lives in a way only John Nash could. Dr. Nash was a huge fan of University of Tennessee Football. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Barbara Nash and a daughter, Dr. Dana Nash. He is also survived by a brother Dr. Thomas O. Nash, Jr. (Beverly), nieces and nephews Bubba Luckett (Amy), Jamey Luckett (Lisa), Leslie Perry (Billy), and Ashley Parks (Billy), Tom Nash, III (Peggy) and Miss Kim Nash, and a brother in law Bill Luckett. We would like to thank our precious friend Steve Peckham for making Johnnie’s life happy and full of activities and joy. We also want to thank everyone at Allen Morgan for their loving care. Dr. Nash attended Second Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Chapel Class. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 14 from 5:00-7:00PM. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 15 at 1:00PM. All services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
