John H. Corbet, 85, of Germantown, TN, passed away Friday, September 9, 2016 of complications from cancer. His visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. until his service begins at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14th at Memorial Park Read Obituary
Dr. Corbet taught a class like he was really enjoying it and so his students enjoyed it too. I was lucky enough to take two of his classes in the 1970s and one in the 1980s and every so often I would see him wandering through the Gem and Mineral Show in the Spring. John Corbet was the best teaching professor in a great Department of Geography at UM during the mid 1960s. He was brilliant in the classroom and readily available to become friend as well as mentor to the graduate students. Bill Stroud and I owe much to John Corbet for our careers in the profession of Geography. After leaving Memphis State in 1967 I saw him rarely, but he was always supportive of us. It is nice to have this opportunity to let Liz and Jill know just how special he was to his students and the positive role that he played in so many lives. Sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Corbet. I was the Geography secretary in the 80’s at University of Memphis. Dr. Corbet was one of the nicest and sweetest men I have ever known. It was a pleasure to work with him. Bless him. Melanie Wilson James
