Joe D. Prowell III, of Nesbit, Mississippi, passed away at 77 on July 15, 2024.
He was born May 2, 1947, to Joe D. Prowell, Jr and Martha Smotherman Prowell in Lebanon, Tennessee. He grew up in Aberdeen, Mississippi, where he met the two loves of his life. Joe fell in love with baseball and his high school sweetheart and eventual wife, Mary Kathryn (Kathy) Stalnaker. Joe graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1965. He and Kathy attended Itawamba Junior College together where Joe played baseball. Joe graduated from Itawamba in 1967; he and Kathy were married in Aberdeen, Mississippi on May 28, 1967. They moved to Starkville, Mississippi, where Joe attended Mississippi State University and played baseball for the Bulldogs. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Education and taught school and coached football and baseball in Clarksdale, Mississippi for one year. He left teaching and started working for Baddour, Inc which became Fred’s Dollar Store. He was a dedicated employee for 37 years. During that time, he traveled to numerous countries and held many titles, including manager, buyer, and vice president until his retirement in 2007.
His most cherished role was that of husband and father. He and his wife Kathy raised two beautiful children in Memphis, Tennessee. He was known for always keeping busy around the house with building projects or car repairs, following everything involving Mississippi State University, and the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, who Joe had followed his entire life. Joe was faithful and dedicated to his family and friends, always ready to lend a helping hand. Joe also had an impact on his children’s friends, who spent time at their home. Sadly, Kathy passed away due to an illness in 1999 after 32 years of marriage to Joe.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (David) Prowell Funk of Lakeland, TN and son, Joe D. Prowell IV of Nesbit, MS and four grandchildren, Joe Paul, Kennedy, Walker, and Campbell, who knew him as Papau.
