I loved Mammaw. We were so close for many years. She was truly a special lady.
My first impressions of Cousin Jane was that she never missed a funeral or wedding in Newport, Arkansas. She always came home for family. I’m so sad we didn’t really get to know her well until her later years when our mother began writing down family memoirs. Mama got in touch with Jane and they immediately became the closest of friends (our mother had been the baby of the group when they were growing up). Several years before my mother died, Mama, Cousin Jane, and myself took a road trip to Nashville, Tennessee to meet our cousin, Holman Cannon Milhous, and we also took a side trip to the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg. During the distillery tour, Cousin Jane asked where they kept the Gentleman Jack and the guide put his arm around her and led her to a barrel to take a big whiff. Jane bought a bottle in the gift shop and shared it with us in the motel that night. I was so glad we got to spend those days together – the three of us laughed and laughed and laughed. It was on that trip. It is entirely Cousin Jane’s fault that I prefer Gentleman Jack! Cousin Jane, you will be missed.
Cousin Jane had this wonderful dry sense of humor. A simple statement could make you laugh hysterically. She was such a fun person and always a pleasure to be around. Even as her illness progressed she never lost her love, appreciation and kindness towards others. I would visit and even though she wasn’t completely sure who I was she would thank me for visiting and tell me she loved me. She will be greatly missed!
