James Mark Hooper's Obituary
James (Jim) Mark Hooper died on August 25, 2021 in Memphis TN. He was 75. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Paula Poyner Hooper, his devoted dog Sparky, and sweet old cat Lily. He was a member of Germantown Presbyterian Church. He is predeceased by his parents, Terry and Mark Hooper, sisters Sharon Cravens and Nancy Kruger, and nephew Tyler Cravens.
Jim grew up in Evansville IN, graduating from Bosse High School in 1963. He attended Indiana University. Jim loved Memphis having lived here over 40 years. He was involved in partnership/management of six local and regional restaurants including Bombay Bicycle Club, East End Grill, Belmont Grill, and Bosco’s. Jim also was part of the team that opened all food venues at the original Mud Island. In later years, he worked with Ernie Mellor and the Hog Wild team, and helped develop the gourmet division, A Moveable Feast. One of his proudest moments was being a guest chef at the famous James Beard House in New York City. He became an avid photographer and wine connoisseur.
Jim leaves behind many friends in the restaurant industry as well as his beloved nieces and nephews. His nephew, Tom (Joanna) Cravens of Memphis and niece, Tracy Haney of Hattiesburg MS were so much a part of his life. He also leaves sister-in-law and brother-in law, Pam and Jerry McElhiney of Gleason TN.
A graveside celebration of life will be held at 11:00 on September 18, 2021 at Hopewell Cemetery in Gleason TN. UPDATE: The service has been postponed. Please Check back for new service times.
