To this day whenever I hear the word “missionary” my mind pulls up the face of Bud Bickers because at his core that’s who he was. It was my privilege to know him as teacher, confidant, counselor, boss, brother in Christ and friend. He worked long and tirelessly on behalf of students to help ensure they could stay in school and succeed in achieving their goals. Above all else I remember him as a man of prayer, a man of compassion, and a man devoted to his family. He and Arleen had a true partnership in which their respective gifts, abilities and intelligence were appreciated, respected and nurtured. He had a keen sense of humor that could break the tension of a heated discussion, a personal outlook on life that was positive and affirming; truly, he was a man without guile. Undergirding all that he was as a man was his unwavering faith in and dependence upon his Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you for investing your life in mine and in the lives of countless others that are spread around the globe. We shall surely miss you but can never forget you. Godspeed. –Bill Hair, MDiv 1980
