Herbert Hilbun's Obituary
Herbert A. Hilbun completed his earthly journey on October 4, 2015 after a great life of over 92 years. Those who celebrate his life include his lov-ing wife of 71 years, Bettye Jane; two sons, Jerry and (Eleeva) of Ruston, Louisiana, Ted (Cherie) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren: Chris (Ashlie), Lyndee Dreher (Christopher), Kisa Hancock (Kevin), Ryan (Tricia), Jay (Allison) and four great-grand-children: Rachyl, Westin, Grace and Wyatt. Several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends survive to remember and honor his life. Herb was born in Horn Lake, Mississippi, in 1923 and lived most of his life in Memphis, Tennessee. He had four brothers: Bill, George, Laban, and Lem-uel; four sisters: Beth, Sally, Jennie Lou and Mamie Lillian. Herb and Betty have resided for the past several years at Kirby Pines Retirement Community. He was an outstanding baseball play-er, and was selected to be on the All-Memphis high school team in 1940 and 1941, as second baseman from Tech High School. He was inducted into the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. He was an avid golfer, and greatly enjoyed his retirement job as a starter at Windyke Country Club. He served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps, Sixth Division, in several of the island campaigns in the Pacific. He was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church and a life-long Christian. He served on the Church Board, worked with Boy Scouts, and served in many leadership capacities. Herb was also a member of the Masonic Order. Herb Hilbun will be remembered for his energetic and optimistic spirit, his cheerful sense of humor, and his love of home and family. He lived with integrity and loyalty in every aspect of life. His family would like to express special thanks to Cross Roads Hospice for their loving care over these several weeks. Instead of flowers, Herb’s family requests memorial gifts be given to Cross Roads United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. A Funeral Ser-vice will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 8 at Crossroads United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. at the church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
