Helen Justine Brothers Crossley's Obituary
Obituary for Helen Justine Brothers Crossley
On Tuesday, May 5th Justine Crossley, our dearest “Baba”, left us in her 108th year after a full life that blessed hundreds who loved and admired her, including her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
Born Helen Justine Brothers on October 29th, 1918 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to parents Anne Electa Kingston Brothers and William John Brothers Sr., the second of eight children.
In 1927, Justine moved with her family to Memphis where she went on to attend Siena College and also where she met the love of her life, her husband, Walton Woods Crossley. Walton and Justine shared 55 years of marriage together, during which they lived modestly but generously, sharing the warmth and hospitality of their home, which was a welcoming haven for extended family and friends many of whom lived with the Crossleys at various times. Even after Justine lost her beloved “Butch”, she continued to express her loving compassion through a welcoming home, shared meals and thoughtful gestures that made people feel they belonged.
Justine is survived by her daughters: Marsha Cromwell (Paul), Malinda Grisanti (Rodney, deceased), Madaline Shaffer (Paul), and Deborah Smith (Clyde), her 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and great-great grandson.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Justine’s dear friend and companion of more than 20 years, Mrs. Eunice Nelson for her loving care and steadfast presence. The family would also like to thank the staff of Methodist Alliance Hospice for their care and support.
