Grover Lee Walker III's Obituary
Grover Lee Walker III of Memphis, TN, went to be with the Lord on January 12, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. He was 74 years old.
Lee was born on July 17, 1949, to Grover Lee Walker Jr. and Mary McDaniel Walker in Memphis, TN. He graduated from White Station High School in 1967 and Memphis State University in 1971. Lee married his high school sweetheart, Susan Rush Wittenberg, in 1971 and began working for the family business, Walker-J-Walker, the same year. Following his father’s retirement, Lee took over as president of the business in 1985, continuing and growing his family’s legacy of excellence in mechanical contracting until his well-earned retirement in April 2007. Upon retirement, Lee quickly and without hesitation traded in his khaki pants and button downs for flip-flops and Tommy Bahama shirts.
Lee and Susan were soulmates whose strong marriage served as an example for everyone lucky enough to know them. Together, they loved to spend time with their children and grandchildren, travel, play golf and relax at their beach home.
Lee was the longest standing member of Colonial Country Club and notably served as president in 1985. He was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and an avid Memphis Tigers fan, faithfully attending football games for more than 50 years.
A long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church, Lee most recently attended Hope Church. Lee’s deep faith was a guiding factor in everything he did and apparent to everyone he met. In both his personal and business life, Lee was respected for his integrity and honesty.
Lee was predeceased by his parents; and his in-laws, Betty and Jimmy Wittenberg. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan; son Grover Lee (Katelin) Walker IV; daughter Kelly (Brett) Hogan; and grandchildren Austin, Kadence, Kelsie and Lena Mathile. He is also survived by his brother Scott (Melinda) McDaniel Walker.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Cary Finn, Dr. Philip Lammers and the staff of Baptist Hospital for their unwavering and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Lee Walker to Collierville Young Life (www.collierville.younglife.org or 340 New Byhalia Rd, Suite 4A1, Collierville, TN 38017) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org or 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 22 at 12:00 pm for a visitation and for a celebration of life at 1:00 pm. All services will be held at Memorial Park (5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38119)
