George Marr's Obituary
George lived a long and purposeful life defined by devotion—to his family, to his work, and most profoundly to his faith. A chemical engineer by training, he spent 37 years with DuPont, taking genuine joy and pride in the work, he did. Even after retiring, he continued consulting for several companies well into his seventies, driven by curiosity, commitment, and a love of problem-solving.
His early years were filled with time outdoors. George loved fishing and boating, even though he never trusted his ability to float and couldn’t swim. In a twist that delighted and amused the family, he became one of the most dedicated supporters of his children’s competitive swimming. He rarely missed a swim meet, cheering from the stands with enthusiasm. He also loved taking his kids out on the boat to water ski, creating memories they carried throughout their lives.
George’s faith was central to who he was. He attended Mass nearly every day and was a committed member of the Fishers of Men ministry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Germantown. His deep belief in God shaped the way he lived: he was generous to a fault, steady in service, and quick to help where he was needed.
He and his beloved wife, Patricia, shared 64 years of marriage, a partnership marked by loyalty, humor, and profound affection. George cared for her with unwavering tenderness through her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and remained by her side until her passing in 2022. He extended that same steadfast love to his youngest daughter, Karen Marr, supporting her throughout her battle with cancer until her passing in March 2026.
George was also known for his warmth and sociability. He loved sharing a beer with friends and neighbors, telling stories, and welcoming new faces. He had friends from all over the country and truly never met a stranger. His generosity, rooted in his deep faith, was a defining part of who he was, and countless people were touched by his kindness.
He is survived by his daughter Maureen Marr, his son Paul Marr, and his daughter-in-law Karen, along with extended family who will forever remember his humility, humor, and quiet strength.
Those who knew George will remember a man who met life’s challenges with grace, found purpose in serving others, and lived his faith through daily acts of love and generosity. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the example he set.
A funeral Mass for George will be held on June 19, 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Germantown. Interment of his ashes will follow in the church’s Columbarium, with a reception at the church afterward.
In lieu of flowers the family would like for people to donate to Birthright of Memphis or the Ocular Melanoma Foundation.
