Gene Brady Jr.'s Obituary
Eugene Giles Brady, Jr., age 89, of Memphis, died Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Memphis, TN.
He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Eugenia Pearce Brady, and his parents, Helen and Eugene Giles Brady, Sr.
He is survived by his son Eugene (Trip) Giles Brady III, of Atlanta, his sister Jane Brady Crawford (Frank) and his nieces Helen Anne DiMeglio (Stephen) of Memphis and Catherine Burnett (Mike) of Tuscaloosa, AL. He also leaves his sister-in-law Brucia Mory (John) of Memphis and nieces and nephews Annie Yoder (Darrin) of Chico, CA, Beth Yarbrough (Matt) of Germantown and John David Mory (Jessica) of Memphis. His great-nieces and nephews are Anna Jane, Nicholas, Cecilia and James DiMeglio, Giles and Crawford Burnett, Kelsey Thomas, Helen and Will Yarbrough, and Jack and Vera Mory.
After attending St. Theresa the Little Flower Grammar School and Christian Brothers High School, Gene earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism and a Masters in marketing from Memphis State University. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and treasurer of the Memphis alumni association.
Gene enjoyed a long career in the editorial department at The Commercial Appeal, retiring after 42 years. An Army veteran, Gene served his country from 1955 to 1958 overseas in Korea. He volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, with over 2000 hours of service.
Throughout his life, he played and officiated baseball and softball. He especially loved pitching. He was a member of the Hernando DeSoto League Baseball Hall of Fame, played for the Memphis Senior Baseball League, and held memberships in the Amateur Softball Association, the TSSAA and the Metro Umpires Association.
A lifelong member of St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church, Gene was a member of the Legion of Mary, a lector and Eucharistic minister. He also attended Sunday evening Mass at St. Louis Catholic Church, where he was an usher.
Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, October 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a Rosary at 6:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 28, 1:30 pm at St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church. Burial will be Tuesday, October 29, 11:00 am at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church, 1644 Jackson Avenue, Memphis, TN 38017.
