A Tribute To A Great And Close-To-My-Heart Mentor- The Late Dr. Genaro Miguel Palmieri (1929-2022).
Dear Sir:
It has been a full month since your dearly departure. Your departure has been truly heartbreaking and a tremendous loss to me and to thousands and thousands of people who have been touched by your heartfelt care, compassion, and love, over your long and very productive journey on this earth. And although your body is no longer present with us, your soul and legacy will continue to be so, forever.
May your soul rest in peace with God in Heaven, Amen.
Brief Introductory History:
I have known Dr. Palmieri since 1995, which is the year I joined the Endocrinology fellowship program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis.
I spent there 2 ½ years until my graduation during which I was trained and mentored by Dr. Palmieri and several other outstanding professors.
A few years later, precisely in January 2003, I had the privilege to work with him again for 8 years at the West Clinic, Memphis, which was his next career stop after his retirement from the University of Tennessee.
Lastly, in 2014, I had the honor of following many of his patients in my private practice in Memphis, upon his retirement from the West Clinic.
Working with Dr. Palmieri has been a great privilege and honor and a pivotal learning experience, both at the academic as well as the personal level.
I learned from him Medicine, Metabolic Bone, Devotion, Compassion, Patience, Hard work, Strong will, ...
He treated me as one of his own family and helped me and supported me without limits.
He was well respected and loved by everyone that knew him, including his medical students and residents, patients, and colleagues. And I am still to this day being inquired about him by many of his former patients and colleagues.
Dr. Palmieri was an icon and a shining star wherever he went, due to his nationally recognized academic achievements, his brilliant mind, his charming personality, and his great sense of humor, to name a few.
Here, I want to take this opportunity to highlight Dr. Palmieri’s famous and signature letters to his patients.
He usually wrote these letters about a week or two after the patients' office visits, in which he went over their test results in details and in an easy to understand language. He wrote them so diligently and faithfully and in a timely manner that his patients would start calling about them after the two weeks were up. At times, he stayed up well after midnight to finish them.
To the same degree, the patients loved and appreciated these letters and talked about them to their families and friends, and many of them even carried them around in their pockets or purses as a valuable medical reference document.
Besides their informative content and value, the letters also made the patients feel special and well taken care of, which meant a lot to them and consequently made them adore Dr. Palmieri.
At the end, I want to extend my deep and heartfelt condolences to my second family, the Palmieri Family, and to tell them how sad and sorry I am for their tremendous loss, and assure them that I will I keep them in my thoughts and prayers and always be there for them.
Raed E. Imseis, M.D and Family.
