Gracious Lavender Basket was purchased for the family of Evelyn “Teb” Davis.
Aunt Teb was always a big part of some of my happiest memories. Visiting Aunt Teb and Uncle Dick as a child was so much fun. They clearly loved entertaining, the more the merrier, and they were excellent hosts. Later on, for about 10 years, Aunt Teb and her Jones siblings (Uncle Carmen, Uncle Euel, Aunt Dean, Aunt Sally, Uncle J.C., and my mom Lucy) organized an annual week-long family reunion at the beach near Gulf Shores, AL. Laughter and reminiscing were the order of the day, also cooking and eating. Aunt Teb’s musical, infectious laughter, her joie de vivre, and her famous shrimp curry are well-loved memories from these reunions. I also remember an improvised chorus line to Uncle Euel’s fiddling – too bad this was pre-cell phones, so we have no video. ??Those Jones girls were sure something, growing up on a farm where they had plenty of chores and responsibility at young ages, but for fun pulled stunts like kidnapping baby pigs and dressing them in doll clothes. I don’t know how they kept from being attacked by the mother sow. Sally, Teb, and Lucy worked their way through the University of Alabama during a time when relatively few women attended college, and went on to careers in the helping professions. Aunt Dean, after a lengthy career as a business owner, later on attended college and became a mental health professional, so all four Jones girls entered the helping professions. As well, they all had good marriages, raised children, and were faithful church members. All of the Jones siblings were extraordinary in their love and support for one another throughout their lives. Uncle Carmen returned home after a grueling stint as a POW during WWII, became a successful business man and pillar of his community and church. He always looked out for and helped his younger siblings. In later life, all of the Jones siblings suffered from severe hearing loss and the attendant communication problems, but they were all (mostly) patient with one another. Aunt Teb and my mom Lucy became especially close after both were widowed early, and for several years, they lived together for long stretches and cared for each other as Teb suffered from memory problems, and Lucy became increasingly frail with osteoporosis, and ultimately developed her own memory losses.Aunt Teb and her siblings were truly exemplars of what Tom Brokaw dubbed “The Greatest Generation”. I admired Aunt Teb for her many accomplishments, and loved her for her warmth and caring. Even as her memory and cognition failed, her essence as a mother concerned with the well-being of her family remained.Chris, Rick, and Cathy, my sympathy and love to you and your family. May the happy memories prevail and sustain you.Love from your cousin Tricia.

There is not much that I can add to my cousin Tricia ‘s tribute to our “gracious southern lady” aunt Teb. I have such fond memories of her and her southern way. She never got in a hurry to do anything. The Jones were a special family with very strong bonds. I miss those wonderful reunions and the jokes and fun times. So sorry I could not be there today. I feel sure they are enjoying a great reunion in heaven.Love to allCousin Carole Phillips Heath
