Eugenia Hill Smith's Obituary
EUGENIA HILL SMITH, age 107, of Germantown, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Germantown Plantation Retirement Home. She was the widow of Clarence Alfred Smith, and was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Hill Hackler and Evelyn Hill Edgerley Stovall, and a brother, Rollin L. Hill. She and her husband lived in Washington, D.C. for many years. While there, they were members of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and she was a deaconess. Upon their return to Memphis in 1960, Eugenia became active in community affairs, including the Mallory-Neely House Board of Directors, The General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Opportunity Club. She was a member and Historian of Germantown Baptist Church; and a charter member of the We-Ah-Tah-Umba Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, where she held various leadership positions. She is survived by her nephews; Lynn Hackler of Arlington, TX; Eugene Hackler of Lawrenceville, GA; Durward Hackler of Alpharetta, GA; Jerry Edgerley of Clarksdale, MS; William Edgerley of Mansfield, MO; and a niece, George Ann Edgerley Caruthers of Mississippi. Services will be at noon Thursday, July 25, at Germantown Baptist Church, preceded by visitation at 11:00 A.M. Graveside services will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Germantown Baptist Church, 9450 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, or Biblical Resource Center Museum at 140 E. Mulberry Street, Collierville.
