Eugene M. Mathes, Jr.'s Obituary
Eugene M. Mathes, Jr. passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 27, 2018 at his home in Bartlett, Tennessee. He was born March 21, 1931 in Trenton, Tennessee and is survived by his wife Patricia R. Mathes, daughter Anne B. Mathes (Joel A. Reisman, M.D.), grandson Charles Rashad Reisman, stepdaughter Janet Anne Bryant and step-grandson Jacob Bryant Ward. Other family members who will miss him deeply include sister-in-law Nelle Pratt, nieces Stephanie Pratt Jones and Angela Pratt, and nephew Vincent Pratt. He was a longtime member of Bartlett United Methodist Church, The Methodist Men’s Breakfast Club, and The Follower’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Mathes attended Bartlett Elementary School, Snowden Junior High School, and Memphis Central High School. When the Korean War broke out, he joined the United States Air Force, serving 22 years. His overseas assignments included tours of duty in Alaska and Okinawa interspersed with several stateside assignments. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in August 1971 he was employed overseas as a civilian contractor for Northrup Aircraft Corp. working with and training Saudi Arabian Air Force personnel. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Funeral services will be held at Bartlett United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Bartlett United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
