Born in Memphis on December 1, 1959, as the second daughter to Bill and Mary Alice Martin. She spent her life deeply rooted in the community that she loved. She attended Sherwood Elementary School, Sherwood Junior High School; graduating from Briarcrest Christian School in 1977. Dedicated to learning and teaching, she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Education from Memphis State University. Betsy worked as a Director of after school tutoring with Final Net Ministries in Downtown, Memphis. She worked for Memphis City Schools, assigned to A.B. Hill Elementary School for 32 wonderful years as a teacher and facilitator. Teaching was her passion and duty that she cherished. She loved teaching and that was her initial calling before she added the role of motherhood.
For many years she accepted her 3rd grade students as her own children until the Lord blessed her, and her husband of 38 years, Steve Calvert, with two wonderful daughters: Madison Elizabeth in 1996, and Rebecca Margaret in 2000.
In addition to being a full-time teacher and mother, Betsy loved to play piano. She spent her time working outside in her yard, swimming, traveling to national and state parks, and visiting places of historical significance.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill Martin and Mary Alice Martin; and older sister, Jamie.
