Edward (Ed) Higginbothom's Obituary
Edward (Ed) Higginbothom, 92, stepped into Heaven on June 14, 2016, following a very brief battle with cancer. He was born on May 29, 1924, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Ed served in World War II in both the First and Third Army of the 187th Field Artillery Battalion. He was shipped to Liverpool, England, at 18 years of age, then to Southampton, England, where his crew boarded LST’s and crossed the channels to Normandy. He arrived in Normandy on D-Day +4 and fought bravely alongside his comrades to help secure the beaches. He then joined General George Patton in Czechoslovakia for the next eight weeks. Ed seldom spoke of his “war days”, but when he did, it was always with a humble spirit and gratitude that he had been allowed the privilege to serve. Ed deeply loved his God, his family, his country, his countless friends, Atlanta Braves baseball, golfing, playing cards with his Colonial Country Club buddies AND the Arkansas Razorbacks. He was a member of Germantown Baptist Church and so enjoyed handing out bulletins each Sunday morning at the same door for many years. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, J.A. and Myrtle Higginbothom; a sister, Jane Henry; and his beloved wife of 59 years, Rose Elizabeth Blackmon Higginbothom. He is survived by his two daughters and (sons-in-law), Susan H. Robertson (Len) of Arlington, TX and Molly H. Plunk (Bob) of Germantown, TN; five grandchildren, Ashley, Lindsay, Melissa, Whitney, and Drew; and nine great grandchildren, Cooper, Tatum, Conley, Kate, Emma Reese, Mav, Annie Rose, Cole and Baker. The family expresses a heartfelt thank-you to the entire staff at Methodist Hospice Residence, where Ed spent the last two weeks of his earthly life. Each and every staff member offered tireless love and care to him. Visitation will be held Friday, June 17, 2016 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forever Young Senior Veterans. We sure are going to miss you more than words can say, but we know exactly where you are and we find comfort knowing we will see you again.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar, Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life…..Behind the Stone Wall”.
