Dorothy West's Obituary
Dorothy Stemick Marvel Carrel West was born to Laura Mae Mann and Benjamin Stemick on August 29th, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She lived a very full life, caring for everyone who came in her path. She loved the Lord, and raised her children that way. Her first husband, James Marvel, died in WW2 and with him she had two children, Michael Marvel(Pam) and Diana Balasky. She then married John Carrel, who passed away in 1981, and they had one daughter Lois Ann Kinney(Wayne), and two step children, Kathleen Patterson and John Michael Carrel(Nancy). In 1985, she married Dr. Earl West who passed away in 2011 and her step children, Bob West(Helen), and Dr. Timothy West(Marcia). She leaves behind 16 Grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Dorothy lived most of her life in Indianapolis, but spent the last 20plus years in Memphis, Tennessee with her late husband Earl. She attended Tech high school, roller skated with the gang at Riverside, and attended Franklin Road Church of Christ until moving to Tennessee where she attended White Station Church of Christ. She had a preschool that she taught while in Indianapolis, SugarnSpice Nursery School. In her earlier years, she was a cook at Woodview Junior Highschool. Dottie grew up cleaning houses with her mother, Laura. She and her brother, “Bernie”, worked hard for their “allowances.” She loved children and the elderly. She loved to have fun. She will be missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Kirby Pines, Linda and the staff at Senior Helpers, Heather and all the people at Crossroads Hospice, and Dottie’s longtime family friend , Madonna Langford, for all of their care and support. A memorial is being held at White Station Church of Christ,Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday, September 20th at 10 a.m. with viewing one hour prior to the service. A private graveside service will follow in Indianapolis with time to be determined at Washington Park East.
