Dorothy Hayes Moore's Obituary
NOTE CHANGE OF VISITATION AND SERVICE TIMES
Dorothy Hayes Moore was born in Jonesboro, AR on March 29th, 1927, and passed away on January 4th, 2023, in Memphis, TN, with her three sons at her bedside. In between the cold facts of those dates lies the story of her long life.
One can’t tell that story by researching the files of newspapers, celebrity magazines, or television. Dorothy Moore was not the kind of person whose mark was made in the media. She grew up as the daughter of a railroad man who frequently had to move in connection with his job. Eventually, she came to live in South Memphis, where she met the man she would fall in love with and marry, Ernest V. “Skip” Moore, Junior. With him she would raise three sons-Ernest V. Moore III, also known as Skip, Robert (Bob), and David. She would spend almost 16 years in Texas, and then return to Memphis, now a grandmother. She and her husband would live in the same house until his passing in November, 2017, and hers in January, 2023.
Still pretty much cold facts.
Where you will find the story of Dorothy Moore is in the memories of those who knew her over the years, when she worked for the Federal Reserve Branch in Memphis after high school and before marriage, in the Mothers’ Club at her sons’ school, or when she was a Cub Scout Den Mother. You will find it in the memories of the people to whom she was always the best of neighbors, of the other members of the Catholic parishes where she and her family were active members. You will find it in the memories of adults who are now past middle age, who recall her as practically a second Mom. You will most certainly find it in the memories of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, altogether too numerous to list here by name. They will tell you of her comforting touch, and of her supportive words, wise advice, and her unfailing caring and concern. And they will tell you of her laugh, which was always distinctive in the hubbub of family gatherings.
Unfortunately, there are many whose memories are sealed away now, for one of the most poignant aspects of a long life is that the time comes when one’s contemporaries, family and friends, have already gone Home to be with our Lord. Even so, those few who remain have their wonderful reminiscences to share, and they do share them, readily and lovingly.
So, as the first part of her life closes, and the greatest part begins, it must be said that Dorothy Hayes Moore was not a famous person, but a wealthy one indeed. A woman whose sons, family and friends honor and venerate her, and who are confident that her Faith has brought her safely to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bequeaths to them a legacy beyond price. Their love for her abides, and will while life lasts, and beyond.
All those who wish to do so are warmly invited to attend and participate in the celebration of her life at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Avenue, in Memphis. The date is Thursday, January 12th, in the Fireside Chapel; visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 12:00 p.m., and the graveside service following at approximately 1:00 p.m. A reception with light refreshments will follow at Memorial Park.
