David Nahmias' Obituary
David Alan Nahmias, a beloved husband, father, and friend, died Tuesday at his home in Memphis. He was 69. His death followed a more than two-year-long battle with thyroid cancer. He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Adam David Nahmias, his brother Mark, and his parents Albert and Bette. He is survived by his wife, Mary, his two children Matthew and Laura, his many close cousins, and his sisters-in-law Suzanne Slone, Kathy Kelley, Carol Ellis and her husband Bill, and Janet Bolton, along with their children and grandchildren.David made friends easily and cherished them. He is survived by many who were as close as if they were his siblings.David was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and raised in Brooklyn, New York and Long Beach, Long Island. He graduated from Memphis State, where he met his wife Mary, and received a degree in education. He was a teacher and later, a financial consultant — a career that allowed him to travel across Europe and Asia, to marvel at and absorb new cultures, food and music. What he did could hardly capture who he was — an optimist, a music fanatic, a sports lover and athlete, and a polymath. He never lost faith in his beloved New York Mets, or his Memphis Tigers. He played almost every sport, and ran three New York marathons. He chaired the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot for 20 years, a race to benefit the March of Dimes.A voracious reader, he was also a 45-year member of the Giant Rats of Sumatra, an organization of Sherlock Holmes aficionados. His love for music was total, his brain a virtual encyclopedia of the entire canon of American rock n’ roll, jazz and soul.If he lived by a creed, it was a simple one: David had an unwavering passion for underdogs and lost causes; a belief that the people who deserve our energy and attention are the ones we most often overlook. In his final days, he was enveloped by his family, his music and his friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, or the Soulsville Foundation https://soulsvillefoundation.org/get-involved/.Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, August 30th at Memorial Park Funeral Home, at 5668 Poplar Avenue. His services will be held on Friday, August 31st at Temple Israel, at 1376 East Massey Road, at 10 a.m., with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at their home after the burial on Friday afternoon.
