Goodby long term friend and former CBHS 1951 classmate, Dave… I’ll miss seeing you at the gun club… Our sincere sympathy to you dear family… Janet and Billy Huettel.
Basket of Joy was purchased for the family of Dave Dermon II.
My friendship with Dave goes back to 1979, when I began a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy at the Millington Naval Air Station. Dave and I met at the Memphis Gun Collectors Club, and we quickly became great friends. Dave’s no-nonsense approach to things and his frank, direct way of dealing with others matched my personality exactly. For the next 36 years, we never had a disagreement about anything, perhaps because, in the Navy tradition of officers’ wardrooms, we never discussed religion or politics. His early example of driving classic Mercedes-Benz automobiles gave me the courage to buy one myself. For the last 15 years or so, my wife Cathi and I would drive up to Memphis from our home in northeast Florida to pick Dave up and have him join us on our annual trip to St. Louis for the International Cartridge Show, where we enjoyed five days of cartridge-collecting fun, fine dining, and great fellowship with other collectors from around the world. When I was writing my book about the history of a rocket ammunition company in California, Dave’s editing of my work proved to be extremely helpful, and contributed a lot to the book’s success. Over the years, I became intimately familiar with Dave’s world-class collection of English revolvers, all of which were “Dermon Quality,” which meant that they were superior in every way. There has never been anyone else like him in my life, and I already miss him terribly. He is gone too soon, before his time.Mel Carpenter
