Crate Layne Maupin's Obituary
Crate “Layne” Maupin died at his home on September 17, 2023, after several years of declining health. He was born in Memphis, TN, on February 14, 1948, to Elmer Crate Maupin and Mary Alice (Timanus) Maupin. He is survived by his wife Ruthie Maupin; sisters Janet (Mike) Morat, Georgeanne Ross, and Genise Lee; brothers Bobby (Diane) Maupin, Roy (Susan) Maupin, and Bradford Maupin; stepsons Bryan (Nicole) Mayer and their children Davis and Maddox, and Rob (Emily) Mayer and their children Drew, James, and McLaine; and many nieces and nephews.
Layne was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Rochelle Maupin, his daughter Cindi Maupin, and son Marcus Maupin.
Soon after graduating from Memphis Catholic High School for Boys in 1966, Layne began a long and successful career in the insurance industry. One of his greatest assets was his genuine interest in the well-being of others, which earned him admiration and respect from all those he encountered.
Layne had several hobbies that brought joy to his life. He tremendously enjoyed golf. As a player himself, he decided to hang up his clubs after hitting a hole in one while playing with his 3 brothers. He thought he had mastered the game and didn’t need to play another round. Instead, he filled his enjoyment for golf by always watching the latest tournament on TV. Layne’s one true passion was cars. You never knew what new car was going to pull into the driveway. He enjoyed being a member of both the Corvette and Porsche Club. Many people knew Layne through the beautifully sleek, perfect in every detail, fast cars he admired! We can only imagine him driving his favorite car, the Porsche Cayman, while listening to his favorite music, The Beatles.
Throughout his adult life, Layne was a source of strength and guidance for his family and close friends. He will be deeply missed by all, and his memory an inspiration.
A celebration of Layne’s life will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday September 22, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am with a Memorial Service to follow at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
