Dr. Charles Edwin Powe Jr., 88, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 18, 2020 from complications of COVID-19 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN.
Born in Florence SC, Ed grew up in nearby Hartsville, SC with his parents Emma and Charles Powe. He attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia where he developed a love for football. After attending Davidson College in NC, he pursued his passion for medicine and the caring for others at the University of Charleston, SC. He met his wife of 58 years, Margaret Sanders Powe in Miami while he was completing his residency. They married and moved to Charlotte, NC where he founded Providence Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was loved by his patients and especially enjoyed helping women with complicated pregnancies. They raised two children, Hettie Powe Reule and Charles Edwin Powe, lll. Ed was an Elder at Calvary Church in Charlotte and later attended Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.
Ed loved adventure and obtained his instrument flight rating certificate. He enjoyed flying his family throughout the United States for vacations and for college visits. Ed was passionate about his faith in Jesus and a desire to care for others which lead to a unique relationship with JAARS in Waxhaw, NC. Sharing his plane, his ability and time, Ed was able to partake in mission trips to South America and the Caribbean Islands.
An avid golfer and tennis player, Ed thoroughly enjoyed his time on the links and on the court at Charlotte Golf and Country Club and his favorite place, Grandfather Golf and Country Club. He played basketball at home at the end of every work day. His love for football lasted his whole life and was a diehard Carolina Panther fan.
Ed and Margaret retired to Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, NC. Here they enjoyed the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and developed wonderful friendships. Ed was an active leader in the community, working with Catawba County Hospice, the local YMCA and GGCC. He lead a men’s Bible study and was a member of Banner Elk Christian Fellowship.
Three years ago Ed and Margaret moved to The Village at Germantown in Germantown, TN. They quickly developed friendships and enjoyed the loving community at The Village. Ed adored his wife and family and loved spending time with them. He developed unique and special relationships with each of his children and grandchildren. He lived a rich and full life that was guided by a deep and profound relationship with Jesus.
Ed is survived by her daughter Hettie Powe Reule and spouse Dean Reule of Tampa, FL, and son Charles E. Powe, III and spouse Lisa Powe of Germantown, TN. He leaves behind five granddaughters who loved him: Anne-Grace, Mary, and Emma Reule and Elizabeth and Margaret Powe. He blessed us with love and family.
The family will be hosting a celebration of his life later this year. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Cypress Point Church in Tampa, FL or The Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk, NC.
