Byron L. Mauck's Obituary
Byron Lottich Mauck, 96 passed away Friday, August 26, 2016 in Leesburg, Virginia. Byron was born October 15, 1919 in New Middleton, Indiana to Roscoe Charles and Marie Louise (Lot-tich) Mauck.Byron grew up on farms in Harrison County and Floyd County Indiana. He graduated from New Middletown High School in 1937 where he played on the basketball team. He was trained and worked as a barber before he entered the US Army. In December 1943 Byron married Mary Alice Sade and they were devoted to each other for almost 67 years upon her passing in 2010. Byron served in the United States Army during WWII and received the gold bars of a Second Lieutenant at the Medical Administrative Corp Officer Candidate School graduation at Camp Berkeley, Texas in April 1943. He was promoted to First Lieutenant and his unit participated in the battles of Normandy, Northern France Ardennes, Rhine Valley and central Germany with the First U. S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious service during the battle of the Bulge. Lt. Mauck saw action in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland and Ger-many and was able to visit England, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy through the Brenner Pass at some time before or after the operation in the European theatre of war. Byron was a Certified Public Accountant and worked as comptroller at Choctaw Concrete in Memphis, Tennessee where he, Mary and their daughter Marsha lived throughout her childhood and graduated high school. They were founding members at Colonial Baptist Church, where he served as a dea-con, bookkeeper and Treasurer. After he retired from Choctaw, he opened a personal business as a CPA. He employed a few assistants over the years, including Clarissa as well as his two grandchildren during the summers off from school! He enjoyed storytelling, composing poetry, playing the harmonica, sing-ing, coin collecting and gardening and watching professional baseball and all levels of basketball, especially University of Memphis basketball — he and Mary were devout fans. Byron was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Alice (Sade) Mauck; daughter, Marsha Heidbrink (husband Robert J Heidbrink, Bowling Green, KY); parents; sister, Margaret Elizabeth Loesch (late husband George), and brother Charles W Mauck (Lafayette, IN). He is survived by his sister, Dorothy McKlm (late husband Pat) of Naples, FL and his grandchildren, Jenny Heidbrink Thompson (husband, Robert Anthony Thomp-son) of Poolesville, MD and Chris Heidbrink (wife Lina Jaramillo) of Ashburn, VA. Other survivors include son-in-law Robert J Heidbrink of Bowling Green, KY and four great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Mitchell Heidbrink (Ashburn, VA), and Hayden Lea and Robert Sawyer Thompson (Poolesville, MD). A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 1 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, the family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:30. A burial with U.S. Army honors will follow service.“Celebrating Life…Behind the Stone Wall”
