Bobby G. Meeks' Obituary
Bobby G. Meeks, 78,was at his Bartlett home with his family when he went to be with the Lord on September 5, 2013 after a 13 year battle with cancer. Bobby was born in Brownfield, Mississippi on April 27, 1935 to the late Charlie Claude Meeks and Willie Mae Tatum Meeks . After moving and growing up in Memphis, Bobby began his highly successful, life-long career as a self-made man in the insurance business at age 19 when he joined American National Insurance Company. Still only in his twenties, Bobby formed his own insurance agency, Consultant Service Insurance Agency in 1961. Bobby led Consultant Service for more than forty years, during which time he rightfully gained an impeccable reputation for honesty and dedication to his customers. The many clients who also became his life-long friends are a testament to not only how Bobby conducted his insurance dealings, but also how he lived his life. He was a member of the Memphis & Shelby County Insurance Advisory Committee. In 2004, due to health concerns, Bobby sold Consultant Service to Clay and Land Insurance, but continued to work there because of his genuine enjoyment of the insurance business. However, even more than work, Bobby Meeks loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Linda, with whom he enjoyed 42 years of marriage. In addition to being a dedicated husband, he was also a caring father. He survived by his two loving daughters, Lisa McLeod and her husband Mark, and by Amy McCullough and her husband Scott. He is predeceased by his son, Steve Meeks, and is survived by Steve’s wife, Lee. In addition, Bobby loved his role of being “Papaw” to his 4 grandchildren, Jake Meeks (Emily), John Meeks (Lindsey), and twins Olivia and Jack McCullough. He also loved his 4 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by Justice Meeks, and survived by Max Meeks, Audrey Gray and Zoe Meeks. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Bradford. Bobby further enjoyed greatly his relationships with his large, extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces, too numerous to mention but loved all the same, whom he regularly saw at many holiday and family gatherings.Bobby enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was an avid Memphis Tigers basketball fan, following the Tigers from the Fieldhouse to the Coliseum to the Pyramid and to FedexForum, in addition to taking his family to see the Tigers on the road from Freedom Hall to the Final Four. He was a Christian and a faithful member of the Church of God. He was a member and past President of the Raleigh Optimist Club. He enjoyed boating in Heber Springs, Arkansas, and he enjoyed working with tools. In fact, there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix. But most of all, Bobby was a good friend to everyone he met. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 1-3 p.m., with the service to begin at 3p.m. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Wings Cancer Foundation at wingscancerfoundation.org or The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, in honor of his great-grandson, Justice.
