Winona Yarbrough Stroupe's Obituary
Winona (Teensie) Yarbrough Stroupe, age 97, died September 10, 2016 in Memphis, Tennessee. A fifth generation Huntsvillian, Mrs. Stroupe was born July 15, 1919 to Nona Cooper Yarbrough and Isaac Curd Yarbrough. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband J. Burton Stroupe. Mrs. Stroupe graduated from Huntsville High School and attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was the second civilian employee hired at Redstone Ordnance Plant (Redstone Arsenal) in 1941, and at one time served as secretary to the Commanding Officer. She retired from the arsenal and civil service after 20 years service. She was an American Red Cross volunteer for many years; was instrumental in founding the Grey Lady program; and was a member of the Huntsville board of directors. She was appointed by the president of the American Red Cross to the Area Advisory Council, Southeastern Area and served in that capacity for three years. She was also a member of the Admissions and Budget Committee of the United Givers Fund, and member of the Grace Club, the Aladdin Club, the Junior League and the Study Circle. Mrs. Stroupe was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Stroupe is survived by her son, John Burton Stroupe; his wife, Patsy; and granddaughter, Sarah of Memphis, Tennessee, several cousins, and canine companion Cody. Visitation, service and interment will be in Huntsville, Alabama.
