Winnie Stone Allbright's Obituary
Winnie Stone Allbright, age 95, passed away May 18, 2013. She is survived by her niece Mary Mitchell of Memphis, TN, her niece Martha (and Dee) Gandy of Germantown, TN, her niece Charlene Stinson of Gatlinburg, TN and her nephew James (and Betty) Allbright of Germantown, TN. Additional survivors include nieces and nephews who live out of the immediate area, spouses of survivors, numerous cousins and children and grandchildren of her survivors. She was preceded in death by her parents, John William Stone and Ruth Eunice Holly, her sisters, Miriam Stone Booth and Lida Stone Smith and by her husband, Paul Hayden Allbright (December 2, 1982).Winnie was born August 4, 1917 in Cabot, AR, raised in Harrisburg, AR and attended Arkansas State College in Jonesboro, AR. While there, she met her future husband Paul H. Allbright. Paul and Winnie both graduated in 1940 and were married on June 8, 1941. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Paul was employed as a civilian employee on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, TN, during the development of the atomic bomb. At this time, Winnie began her teaching career. Paul and Winnie lived in Memphis, TN for many years. Paul worked in insurance and Winnie finished her career as an elementary education teacher, retiring from the Memphis City Schools.As a young lady, Winnie was an accomplished pianist. Winnie served as the President of the American Association of University Women in Memphis and was honored by the AAUW with a Grant Fellowship Award. She enjoyed serving for several years as a docent for the Wonder Series. Her hobbies included pickling, cooking, traveling and educational tours worldwide. She enjoyed the many cruises she took with members of her family. Winnie was a long-time member of the Kingsway Christian Church. A woman of strong faith, her church held a special place in her heart. Winnie endowed two scholarship programs. An annual scholarship is awarded to ROTC Cadets at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. A scholarship is awarded through the Christian Church Foundation to young ladies who are called into service with the Church.The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Kingsway Christian Church, with interment at Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
