Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Matt.
I was deeply saddened on Christmas Eve when I heard that you had passed away. However, I find comfort in knowing that you have finally found peace. I had the privilege of knowing you for about eight years. I still remember the day we met. You were standing next to your house as I put my trash can out for collection after just moving into my new home. I asked you when the city would come for garbage collection, and you replied that it would be on Monday. Then, you casually mentioned, "By the way, please know that we are Democrats." and I was like, what? 😳 You could probably tell from my accent that I am an immigrant, and you wanted to comfort me by letting me know that I was welcome in the neighborhood 😄
I also cherish all the things I learned from you. You taught me how to start my first lawnmower, how to manually open and close my garage door, and how to trim banana trees. You shared so much knowledge with me as a neighbor.
You created an extraordinary memory for Julian and me on December 8 when you called to say that you had found our German Shepherd, Willis.
Matt, you chose a blessed night to leave our world—right at the moment when everyone was praying in their churches. Your journey began at such a beautiful time, when angels had descended to Earth. I am sure they carried you with kindness, and you left our world happily.
We will miss you dearly. May your soul rest in peace, and may your memory always be cherished.
Your neighbor and friend,
Farimah, since 2018.
