William B. Walk's Obituary
William Boswell Walk, Sr. of Memphis, who was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend passed away on September 22, 2015 at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents Claud L. and Dorothy Walk of Covington. Bill is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years Wilma Wylie Walk, his children Cindy Harrell of Tampa FL, Kim Shropshire (Harvey) of Collierville, Bill Walk Jr. (Maggie) of Memphis, six grandchildren, Michael Harrell Jr. of Monterey CA, Emily Harrell of Tampa FL, Madison Walk, Thomas Walk, Will Walk, and Henry Walk of Memphis; his sisters, Janice Jones and Jo Ann Walk of Germantown, 1 nephew, two nieces, his devoted friend and care giver Curtis Manning and a host of other family and friends. Bill was born and raised in Covington and graduated from Byars Hall High School in 1953, where he excelled in both academics and athletics, including football, basketball, and baseball. He was recently inducted into the Byars Hall (Wildcats) Hall of Fame. Bill attended Memphis State University where he received his undergraduate degree and subsequently a Masters of Education Administration. He began teaching at the junior and senior high school level while also coaching various athletic teams. He was promoted to supervisor of elementary personnel at the Memphis Board of Education. Bill then left that post to become principal at Maury Elementary for a short time and then Raleigh Bartlett Meadows Elementary for the rest of his career. In October of 1991, Bill was honored in Washington D.C. as a “National Distinguished Principal” for his outstanding contributions to his school and community. He also received national recognition for Raleigh-Bartlett Meadows Elementary for his innovative arts and environmental education programs. Bill was an avid reader and golfer, enjoyed sports, friends and spending time with his family. His kindness and generosity were second to none and it has been said by many that he was “the last true gentleman.” The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until the funeral begins at 11:30 am, Saturday, September 26 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Buntyn Presbyterian Church, Methodist Hospice Residence or National Alzheimer’s Association.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
