William Dodds Roberds, Sr.'s Obituary
William Dodds Roberds, Sr., a lifelong Memphian, 91, died on September 10, 2017. He was born August 22, 1926. He was the son of the late E. S and Reba Roberds. He attended Normal Training School and graduated from Central High School, where he played in the first Lions Benefit football game. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Phi Kappa Fraternity. After graduating early in 1944, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he was a member of SAE fraternity. He received an appointment to Kings Point, the Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, Long Island, New York. He graduated from Kings Point and served in World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He graduated with a degree in economics from Southwestern (now Rhodes College). He was a stockbroker for thirty years. He was a member of Chickasaw Country Club. He was a former charter member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was a member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church. He was preceded by his parents and his sister, Jeanne Roberds Burrow. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally Dame Roberds, his son, William Dodds Roberds, Jr., and his daughters Sara (Sissy) Carpenter (Doug), and the Reverend Ellen Roberds (the Reverend Jarad Bingham) all of Memphis and five grandchildren: Katie Elizabeth and Wallace Carpenter and Abram, Obed and Bella Bingham of Memphis. Services will be held 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 13 at Idlewild Presbyterian Church with visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials to be made to Idlewild Presbyterian Church.
