William McElroy's Obituary
William F. “Bill” McElroy, Jr. was born to William F. and Kathryn C. McElroy on May 19th, 1929 in Memphis Tennessee and died On May 16, 2010. He graduated from Germantown High School in 1946 and attended the University of Tennessee and Memphis State University. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1950 and served 46 months with two tours in Korea. In 1953, Bill joined the family business, McElroy Insurance Agency Inc. serving as President. He married Mary Ann Tyson in 1955 who preceded him in death in 1994. He is survived by his children Trip (wife-Tricia), Mary and Susan McElroy, all of whom worked with their father in McElroy Insurance Agency, Inc. Bill joined the Kiwanis Club in 1957 and was named “Kiwanian of the Year” in 1989 and later served as President. He was a member of Highland 100 and served as President and Chairman of the Board. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Liberty Bowl Festival Association and was associated with The Liberty Bowl from 1965 – 1994. He was Executive Vice President and assistant to Executive Director, A. F. Dudley. He was one of the founders of the Memphis Chapter National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and was recipient of the “Distinguished American Award.” Bill was Past Chairman and King of RaMet, one of the Carnival Krewes. He served on the Board of Directors and Gala Committee for the Marguerite Piazza Gala for 18 years. He received the Dr. James W. Bodley Americanism Award in 1990 from the American Legion. He was involved with the Service Academy Spring Classic for many years and worked with the Bowl Games of America planning activities for the participants in the Liberty Bowl Half-Time Show. The visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, May 17, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, also at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests donations be made to the Memphis Chapter National Football Foundation Bill McElroy Scholarship Fund, PO Box 40624, Memphis, TN 38174.
