William Andrew "Andy" Humphries' Obituary
William Andrew “Andy” Humphries was born in Memphis, TN on August 17, 1959, to Jim and Dorette Humphries. He passed away on January 1, 2024, after a brief illness. Andy attended Presbyterian Day School, Memphis University School and Vanderbilt University. He had a successful career in banking, having spent the majority of his professional years at First Tennessee Bank, now First Horizon, before joining First Citizen’s Bank. He is survived by his wife Renee and her sons Austin and Andrew.
Andy led an active life. He was an accomplished athlete, excelling in tennis, soccer, diving, running and most importantly, in his beloved sport of catamaran racing. The son of a sailor, Andy had a forty-year love of sailing and for his fellow sailors, who will miss and mourn him. Although Andy won too many cat races to name, ranging from regional regattas to national championships, he was modest in all his successes on the racecourse. He was a member of the Ocean Springs Yacht Club where he spent many happy seasons. His sailing companions describe him as a great mentor, a true constant in the Hobie sailing world and a huge advocate for the sport. He was generous with his knowledge and was a fierce and fair competitor. But in addition to their recognition of him as a great sailor, his fellow seafarers remember his kind heart, his warm smile and words of encouragement.
Andy loved his family. He was devoted to his mother, to whom he spoke each day. He deeply admired his brother Ken and his wife Joanne and was a doting uncle to their children Henry (Lindsey), Jim (Kathryn), Stuart (Meghan) and Katy. He was very proud of his sister Camille, her husband Fred and their daughters Alexis and Rachel. He grieved the loss of his brother Chris, who proceeded him in death in 2021.
Andy was also deeply committed to his God and was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Sojourners class.
Services will be at held on January 12, 2024 at Second Presbyterian Church, 4055 Poplar Avenue Memphis, TN 38111. Visitation will be in the Salmon room at 2:00 pm with services to follow in the chapel at 3:00 pm.
Those wishing to acknowledge Andy may contribute to the Ocean Springs Sailing Squadron, a program to train young sailors, at 100 Front Beach Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564 or to Second Presbyterian Church at 2pc.org.
