William Harold Butler's Obituary
William Harold Butler, 79, retired architect, died at his home Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Mr. Butler was born on September 20, 1931, in Sumner County, TN. He served in the Marines during the Korean War, where he suffered a near fatal accident breaking his back. Told by doctors that he would never walk again, he endured five years of painful therapy to prove them wrong. His primary education was in Gallatin, TN at the Gallatin Public School System. He continued his education in architecture at the old William R. Moore School of Technology. During his tenure in architecture, he was associated with the firms of Robert Lee Hall, Architect; Hall & Waller, Architects, and Metcalf Crump & Associates. Harold worked on the design of several prominent buildings in the Memphis area, the hallmark being the Clark Tower. He was a Germantown resident for over 40 years, and a member of Germantown United Methodist Church. His wife, Martha Butler, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Dr. Tony (Dorothy) Butler, and two grandsons, Chad and Parker of Summit, NJ. Additional survivors include his sister, Sue Butler of Gallatin, TN, Bill Butler of Nashville, Lewis Butler of Gallatin, his sister in law, Jo Ann (Del) Mercer of Germantown, lone Marks of Fairfield, CA, and eleven nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis TN with a private funeral to follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorials may be made to Germantown United Methodist Church, 2136 S. Germantown Rd.
